Visit London City Airport

The London City Airport is a real life airport located in the former Docklands Site.

The airport has a single 1500 meter runway and was designed for small aircraft, short domestic flights to the UK, then later, Paris and Amsterdam.

Although the airport opened it 1988, many carriers did not use it as pricing was considered prohibitive and the limitations on the types of planes that could use the airport made it restrictive.

In 2009 British Airways began their first transatlantic flights to New York and London City Airport  began to enjoy immense success, handling over 4 million passengers per year.

You can now take to the skies from London City Airport in London City2 in a Piper PA 28 Cherokee plane and fly yourself anywhere you like within the London City Estate.

The controls should be easy enough to handle,  Left and Right makes you go... left and right, and up and down with adjust your pitch and yaw.  Page up and Page down control the thrust.

It may take you a couple of attempts to get airborne successfully, but don't worry if you crash into the drink.  The rezzer will make a nice new plane for you!

Viaduct Street, 1 Linden Home Rentals

Get your foot on the property ladder!

As part of our commitment to new residents in Second Life, the London City Estate offers fully furnished homes for 1 Linden per day in a great location, just across the road from the Worlds End Pub!

Each home comes with a front garden and furnished interior and a driveable car!  For privacy, once rented your front door and gate will only permit you to enter.

If a new resident does not have a linden, they can easily earn it in many places throughout this estate which offer cash rewards for simple tasks.

These homes are intended for players under 6 months old.   Rez rights are not granted for these rentals.   For rez access the resident needs to rent an unfurnished house which is charged as a realistic but competitive rate.

The Weekend in Video Review

Another scorching weekend here in the UK with temperatures in the upper 80's and touching 90F from time to time.   We were glad to have the pool and beach handy, even if we did have to imagine our real life selves submerged in the virtual water!

Enjoy the video the weekend events!

Vintage Footage Time!

London City is celebrating its fifth Birthday throughout August.

Enjoy this vintage footage shot around 2010 (we think) of Regent visiting the original London in Mephilo Tor before it became London City.

You can see the original hub area as it was, the canal (yes we used to have one) and our expansion into Aelburt sim, which allowed for us to have up to another 40 visitors by staggering the districts over two regions.  Goodness was Mainland ever complicated!   Enjoy another trip down Amnesia Lane.

London City 5th Birthday

The original Soho Square in 2009
Join us throughout August as we celebrate five years of London City!

Five years ago, we opened Mainland London, which later became London City in Second Life.

It started on a small piece of land on the Mainland in a region called Mephilo Tor. It was just large enough for Soho Square, four shops and the Bar Soho club.

We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate that so many people wanted to get involved in the project very early on and we grew rapidly to a half region within 12 weeks of opening, by adding Regent's Park.

Within 6 months we had outgrown the confines of the Mainland region because there was no more space to acquire and we relocated by purchasing a private island region which became London City.

The original Regent's Park in 2010
The regions London City2 and 3 were added within the first year and we were able to create the metropolis of London largely familiar to our visitors today. In 2013 we added our Seaside region, London Adult.

The London City Estate today
Throughout August, we hope you will join us for the 5th Birthday Celebrations in London City.  We are rereleasing some of the most popular initial freebies we created in a hunt and there will be weekly concerts and a carnival theme.

Thanks to your incredible support London City is not only the most popular London in Second Life, it is largely considered to be the ubiquitous London in Virtual Worlds and is Second Life's single most popular destination.

Our sincere thanks to the team many of whom have been with us since the very beginning, the merchants and visitors for making this possible.

Enjoy this video of our humble beginnings as Mainland London way back from 2009.

Tina Turner Saturday

Born Anna Mae Bollock and best known as Tina Tuna, her musical career got going in the 1950s.

Tina and loving husband Ike Turner had a string of notable hits, River Deep Mountain High, Nutbush City Limits and Proud Mary and enjoyed their success with cigarettes and whisky and wild wild  women.

However, behind the scenes Ike was knocking poor old Tina around and they split in 1976.  Five years later, after getting rid of her husband, Tina hit superstardom with Let's Stay Together, Private Dancer and What's Love Got To Do With It.  A legend came into being.

Enjoy Tina's most famous hits this weekend, here in London City.

London City - First Legal Sploder in full compliance with Skills Gaming Rules

London City presents The first totally legal sploder, fully compliant with the new Skills Gaming Rules.

The beloved sploder, even those that rely entirely on skill, are about to be outlawed throughout Second Life, except on Skill Gaming Regions.

So even little clubs paying tiny amounts of money into sploders will eventually get a visit from the fun police, also known as the Second Life Governance Team, once this new rule comes into effect on 1st August.

The problem is that if you allow anyone to pay anything, even 1 linden into a machine that rewards or pays a prize, then the device in question is classed as a Skills Game and for that, you have to apply for a licence.

Whether or not Linden Lab will pursue little fun things like a sploder is not known at this time, but you can bet your life that if someone puts in a complaint that a skills sploder has failed to pay them, in a non skills region, the lab will take a peek.

London City has created Second Life's first completely legal sploder under the new rules.  It works on a simple principle, it does not permit anyone to pay into it.

The cash prize in our sploder is paid for by us and all the resident has to do is click it for a chance to win.   After the given random period, the sploder counts down just like before and it splits the pot between 4 random people who have joined the game.   For added security it includes an anti-idling device to prevent people clicking, then going away for an extended period.   When the winner is chosen, the prize must be claimed by clicking the sploder again.  Cheeky huh?   Click it too many times when it is not due to pay and it will treat you as a bot and remove you from the pay list.

We think we have it covered and we hope you will enjoy our Free to enter sploder, the successor to our now outlawed Linden Dollarbie Sploder which charged a whole linden for you to join.. and even though it paid you back a minimum of 3L it will eventually fall foul of Skills Gaming rules.

Dearie me.  Here's to circumvention and here's to Second Life's first totally legal Sploder under the new Skills Gaming rules!

See it in action at the concert on Saturday.

New Resident Help Center

We were all new to Second Life once and if like me you found yourself dumped on an island with little or no help, never fear London City is here!

Our renovated New Resident Help Center is dedicated to assisting new residents as well as those who have been away from Second Life and missed all the changes.  The LC NRH is centered around the current Second Life Viewer build and includes an overview of the User Interface as well as some very handy Quick Tips for those Residents in a hurry to start their Second Life.

As ever, our team of dedicated Support Staff is always on hand, but with our exclusive Live Support feature Residents in need of help can now chat live with a London City Support member with just one click. We have eliminated the need to search out tags or specific Staff Members with this feature.

As a compliment to the LC NRH Center, those Residents wishing to learn more about the UI will be able to attend free form classes that will cover a wide range of topics. These classes will be informal, interactive and above all fun.

If you are new to Second Life or are returning to a world that seems just a little unfamiliar, be sure to visit the LC NRH Center.

London City Exclusive - Immersive Weather Experience

We have developed what we believe to be Second Life's first completely immersive weather system here in London City.

Traditional weather systems rely on the use of particles which invariably remain as grey unrezzed blocks swamping the local area for up to a minute, sometimes even longer and lack the finesse that is available via modern specular mapping.

The London City Immersive Weather Experience is extremely low lag (far lower than any particle system)  and uses a single multifaceted mesh prim to draw in the weather (be it rain or sunshine glistening on the pavement) in the wink of an eye, using photo realistic animated texturing, with support for the Advanced Lighting Model.

Seeing is believing so... You can check out this new system for yourself with scheduled showers lasting five minutes each at: 11.45am, 3.45pm, 7.45pm, 11.45pm (UK times) each day here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/London%20City/87/230/24

As soon as we are completely happy with the performance of this new system, we will bring it to the Market Place.  For now, you can experience it exclusively in London City.

Kirk Beams Down

Known for his roles as Captain Kirk, TJ Hooker, Denny Crane and the Priceline Negotiator, The Shat added a personal appearance in London City to his resume this weekend, where he wowed the crowds with his amazing vocal skills.

The Shat landed via Shuttlecraft and immediately began to sing to the gathered audience. The full hour concert brought an enormous attendance, some to enjoy the music, but most to see what he would do to it.

It was a lot of fun putting on a quirky event like this and great to see so many people enter into the spirit of it.   Enjoy the video.

Chip Takacs singing LIVE in London City

London City are proud to bring to you LIVE entertainment in the form of singer Chip Takacs.

Who and what is Chip Takacs? Chip is a boy who was born an raised in the seaside town of Rockaway Beach, New York.  at 14 he traded a B.B. gun for a secova electric guitar. Taking lessons from his friend Mike Gordon he progressed to play live shows  at local bars in Rockaway. His crowning moment came when he got to play New York's famous night club, CBGB's.  Chip has played many different places since then and now brings his music to second life.

Using professional back tracks, he sings and plays live guitar, as if the back tracks are his band. Chip mainly covers songs from the hits of the 70's 80s, and beyond.

He has a typical Brooklyn attitude and isn't afraid to let it flow at his show, and the music has the same bend... some like it, some don't... one thing they all agree on is, it is a show to see and hear...

Make sure you head on over to London City for an event you won't forget.
He takes the stage in LC3 at 11am SLT on 4th July... come on over and join the fun!
